Here's an entry of blog about my experience of Dokomi. One of the biggest cosplay convention of Germany.

Note: It took me a while to write this blog entry, I am aiming its publication for may 2023. The writing of this entry started in september 2022.

The TLDR: Dokomi is a very good convention, also a good exterior with the park outside of the convention for photos and videos. This is one of my prefered public convention, opposed to private ones such as Volta, Pixelmania or Focus cosplay.

Dokomi is a convention which took place near the end of april each year before Covid. During Covid, contrary to other conventions, there were still editions that actually happened, in september 2020 and in august 2021. The 2022 edition took place in june. The 2023 edition was announced for July and will last three days, friday, saturday and sunday from the 30th of june to the second of july 2023 - source.

I went to Dokomi in 2020 and 2021, I had no ticket for these editions as they were sold out and I sticked to the park, I was very happy even if I did not enter the convention those years. For 2022, I asked for a press accreditation. The selling of tickets tickets for the 2023 edition started on the 26th of september 2022. For the people who want to go inside, I can only advise to buy tickets earlier as they tend to be sold out quickly.
Note: On the 27th of april 2023, only friday tickets are still available, probably due to the targeted public might be less available this day.

The convention takes place at the "Messe Hall" of Düsseldorf, a convention center, a modular set of buildings, which has several big halls and other more convivial structures that allows differents atmospheres, some being calmer. It's very big, but it's still inferior in size to Japan Expo in pure term of surface: 60000 squares meters vs 140000 square meters for Japan Expo. The number of visitors is near 55000 (vs 240000 for JE). All the available surface does not seem to be rented out.

For the cosplay contest and similar activities, a big stage was in a dedicated hall, with a somewhat loose and appreciable organisation from I've seen. I could set up my tripod to film the contests without any difficulties.There was a second stage in an amphitheater with other activities that I did not check much. The press accreditation did not give any advantage except the free entry, which was fine considering there were no restrictions on the organization level, unless some other conventions. I actually enjoyed that part and it's not really a critic.

There was also a 18+ area, that could be accessed only by people of age 18+, from my personal point of view, it was not exceptional (it's more or less my personal point of view, I am more or less myself 'located' on the asexual scale), except the thematic of the stand was adult / lewd / erotic. It was also forbidden to take photos inside of it. A wristband was needed to enter it, you could obtain it by presenting papers proving you were 18+ after applying to a local queue.

I am coming to the goal of this entry: How good is Dokomi ? What is its interest ? For me, it can be defended by two major points: a great number of amateur booths that were located (in 2022) in the hall 3 and a very big and very beautiful park next to the convention : The Nothpark, which is a good place to take cosplay photos and videos, without too much hassle and some conviviability, The park also offers distinctive areas, including a japanese garden, which tends to be crowded a bit much. For those two reasons, I'd place Dokomi as one of the best convention of Europe for cosplay photography. with Lucca Lucca in Italy et some past editions of Animecon (in The Netherlands) when they were at the World Forum de La Haye / Den Haag.

For the logistic costs, I took an hotel in the center of Düsseldorf, 3 nights at 50 euros each night. For the public transport, it was possible to benefit from the 9 monthly euros ticket. To that I had to add 110 euros of plane ticket from Nice (France) to Düsseldorf on the friday with a return on the monday and about 60 euros to go forth and back to Nice in train... If I am comparing to the other conventions I named, it is fairly reasonable. Lucca is really expensive for the side and a night of hostel in Pisa (which is 45 minutes by train from Lucca) can costs about 120 euro per night. Animecon is also more expensive in transport and hosting. Japan Expo costs me between 200 à 300 euros (train + hotel) not including the food.

This year (2023) the price for the hotel I took is around 110 euros per night. I don't know if there are other activities that time that might be affecting the hotel prices.

For reminder, I am near Toulon in the South of France, Düsseldorf is at 4 hours from Paris by car and can by reached by Thalys from Paris.

Last thing to add: if you plan on passing your time outside in the park, take an umbrella as it always rained at some point when I was there. There is not really any place that is safe from the rain in the park.

If all goes well, I will be at Dokomi 2023, I don't know yet if I'll enter the convention. Covering the video stages forces me to bring a dedicated tripod and honestly, it's a lot of work with no returns for me. I'll probably stay in the Park for the three days.

Je vous mets un billet de blog consacré à mon expérience à Dokomi, une des plus grandes conventions allemandes.

Note: j'ai mis un peu de temps à écrire ce billet de blog, je le reprends pour publication finale en mai 2023.

L'écriture du billet a été commence en septembre 2022 en fait. Je tenterai de faire une version anglaise.

Le TLDR: Dokomi est une très bonne convention, avec un bon extérieur en dehors de la convention pour des photos et vidéos de cosplay. Une des meilleurs conventions publiques en europe, public par opposition aux conventions privées tels que Volta, Pixelmania ou encore Focus Cosplay.

Dokomi est une convention qui avait lieue traditionnellement vers la fin avril avant la période liée au covid. Durant le covid, contrairement à d'autres conventions, elle a continué d'être organisée, en dehors des dates habituelles, c'est à dire en septembre 2020 et en aout 2021. L'édition 2022 s'est tenue début juin, l'édition 2023 est annoncée début juillet et se déroulera sur trois jours au lieu des deux jours habituels du vendredi 30 juin au samedi 2 juillet 2023 (source).

J'y étais allé en 2020 et 2021, j'avais été pris de court pour acheter des entrées, celles ci ayant été limitées du fait du COVID. Pour 2022, j'ai demandé et obtenu une accréditation presse. La vente des tickets pour l'edition 2023 est annoncée à compter du 26 novembre 2022. Pour les gens souhaitant visiter l'intérieur de la convention, je ne peux que conseiller de ne pas trop attendre, toutes les places disponibles ayant été vendues lors des trois éditions précédentes.

Note: au 27 avril 2023, il ne reste que des billets pour le vendredi, probablement du fait que le public cible soit moins disponible ce jour la.

La convention se déroule au Messe Hall de Düsseldorf, un centre de convention, modulable, comportant de grands halls ainsi que des structures plus conviviales permettant des ambiances différentes notamment plus calmes. C'est très grand, par contre, ça reste inférieur à Japan Expo en terme de surfaces: 60000 m² contre 140000 m² pour JE. Le nombre de visiteurs se situe aux alentours de 55000 (contre 240000 pour JE). Toute la surface disponible ne semble pas loué.

Niveau scène, une scène dédiée dans un hall, avec une organisation assez souple pour ce que j'ai pu constater. J'ai pu déployer un trépied et filmer sans trop de soucis. Il y avait une seconde scène mais je ne suis pas allé la voir. Les accréditations (presses) ne donnent pas de droit particulier à ce sujet la et la souplesse organisationnelle permet de faire ce qu'on veut, contrairement à d'autres conventions.

On avait aussi une zone 18+, accessible uniquement aux personnes dont l'âge avait été vérifié. J'ai pu faire un tour, maintenant, je trouve qu'elle n'avait rien d'exceptionnel (c'est un avis strictement personnel, j'ai une forte tendance sur l'asexualité) si ce n'est qu'elle contenait des stands dont la thématique était adulte, c'est à dire des contenus sexualisé, dit 'lewd' ou erotique, la prise de photo y était interdite, pour y entrer il fallait un bracelet qu'on obtenait après avoir fait une file d'attente dédiée où l'age et l'identité des personnes était contrôlée.

J'en viens au point de ce billet: Quel est l'intérêt de Dokomi? Pour moi, cela tient en deux points: un grand nombre de stands amateurs situés (en 2022) dans le hall 3 et un très beau et très grand parc situé pas très loin de la convention : le Nordpark. On peut donc y faire des photos assez librement sans trop de contrainte et avec une certaine convivialité, le parc offre aussi plusieurs ambiances, dont un jardin japonais, même si ce dernier est un peu pris d'assaut par le public. Pour ces deux raisons la, je placerai volontier Dokomi comme une des meilleures conventions cosplay d'Europe, avec Lucca en Italie et certaines éditions d'Animecon (aux Pays Bas) quand c'était organisé au World Forum de La Haye.

Au niveau des couts, j'ai pris un hotel en centre ville, 3 nuits à 50 euros la nuit. On pouvait bénéficier du ticket à 9 euros par mois pour se déplacer localement (le ticket unitaire étant dans les 3 euros). A cela il convient d'ajouter dans les 110 euros d'avion au départ de Nice le vendredi avec un retour le lundi et dans les 60 euros pour aller à Nice en train... Je dois dire que si je compare aux autre dessertes, cela reste très raisonnable: Lucca est hors de prix au niveau de l'hébergement (120 euros par nuit à Pise), Animecon est plus cher au niveau transport et hébergement (80 euros la nuit pour une nuit de plus). Japan Expo me revient à dans les 200 à 250 euros hors nouriture vu que j'arrive facilement à trouver des gens avec qui je peux partager l'hébergement.

Les prix des chambre d'hotel que j'ai constaté pour 2023 sont plus chers, plus de 110 euros la nuit au lieu des 50 que j'avais payé auparavant.

Pour rappel, je suis vers Toulon, Düsseldorf est à 4 heures de la région parisienne en voiture et peut être atteinte en Thalys depuis Paris.

Une dernière chose, si vous comptez rester dans le parc, prévoyez un parapluie, car il y a souvent de la pluie durant Dokomi: j'en ai vu durant toutes les éditions auxquelles j'ai assisté. Il n'y a pas vraiment d'endroits pour s'abriter dans le parc quand il pleut, même sous les arches, ça traverse pour avoir testé.

Si tout va bien, je serai présent à Dokomi, j'ignore si je rentrerai dans la convention, les grand halls et les foules me lassant de plus en plus, mais je serai toujours présent dans le parc, vu que les conditions pour de bonnes photos y sont optimales.
